Lets make this clear

A couple of weeks ago, a long standing customer of ours called me to try and resolve some issues they were having with their recycled water.

Lots of grit in the water, milky consistency and generally not pleasant.

After discussing how they were operating, like many, many owners, they had over the years had various chemical companies come in , promising that they could reduce their additive bill and improve their water.

Subsequently they found themselves with an extra pump adding into the dirty water pit and something to dose into the flocculant tank.

“What is wrong with that” you ask …. on the face of it nothing. It seems proactive.

But its wrong. Adding a flocculant into the dirty water pit will make the sludge start to settle there. By the time it gets into the silo, its watery and the mud is in the pit. So we can actually easily remove it.

The pit clogs up with mud, you have to raise the pump and your overall total water capacity goes down, making it dirtier faster and exacerbating the issue.

The whole problem is made worse by engineered stone.

In the old days, solids were more easily settled but the recent changes and expansion in colours of engineered stone have presented a real problem. The lighter particles stay suspended as they are too light to “floc” and settle, so the water remains milky, even when left to stand for long periods.

So what to do …..

Ruby Granite in NorthWales’ machine is 3 years old and like all Turrini machines already has a flocculant dosing system built in. Recently we have started adding a coagulant system to all new machines to combat the newer material.

Milk anyone ?

As the water at Ross’s is milky and clearly full of suspended solids, we installed a coagulant pump and a couple of other items – which for reasons of intellectual property protection will remain under wraps – in order to change the quality of water.

We dose additive ONLY when and as we take water from the pit. It doesn’t run constantly, bleeding away your money and putting too much in the system, only when it is needed and at the exact point it enter the silo so it gets straight to work.

A couple of hours work while the machine is running, 5 minutes with it off and we are ready to go.

This next image shows three bottles of water taken a few minutes apart, AFTER we turned on the coagulant.

Starting to clear

You can already see the suspended solids clearing.

This water is taken from the machines, so the solids are settling in the silo, exactly where we want them, not in the pit.

At this point they are finished for the day, but are laving some machines running overnight, milling down and finishing CNC programs (you can do that with one of our water systems – as they are on demand, they stop when the machines stop).

So I left them, with instruction what settings to move the machine to the following morning.

First thing this morning Ross called.

I want first to remind you of the water when I arrived.

“Bloody brilliant” Ross told me ….”I’ve sent you some photos”

“I trusted you that it would work, but this is amazing”

The Pit Today
The water from the machines today

You can see the water exiting the plant is milky still in the outlet pipe.

By the time its been through our silo, its virtually crystal clear.

Delivered on demand, under pressure, to your machines.

Filter it further with one of our 10 micron, high volume filter housings to comply with your CNC manufacturers internal water spec. and use ALL recycled water. No more big water bills.

So if you have a Turrini water recycling system and you have got in a bit of a mess with your chemicals and your quality, give me a call and we can get you sorted.

You will need an upgrade (we have done them on 20 year old machines so everyone is eligible) and you will need to use more additive, but we carry it in stock (in volume), test and improve regularly, but above all else, will ONLY provide compositions and combinations that are suited to your machinery, not aggressive and highly corrosive material.

If you don’t have a Turrini, now is the time to look into it.

p.s.
A small note about bags.

I talked a little while ago about them (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/sibradbury_mud-waterrecycling-activity-6677907678938882048-qpz0), well the first time I visited Ross to discuss the water, I left a couple of our bags with him to try. He was using some bags from a large UK tooling distributor.
Ours are larger and more importantly the correct porosity to dry out your sludge fast. As soon as they tried them they could see the difference. The stock they had purchased elsewhere has now been returned and they will only use ours from now on.
Sometimes it is worth spending a little more money, to have the right thing for the job.

Thank you as always to Ross at Ruby Granite. Always a pleasure to work with you sir !
